NWE projects share stories about their impact on the ground

Through its 91 funded projects, the Interreg North-West Europe Programme addresses key societal challenges in the area, from climate adaptation to social inclusion. With its five Priorities and nine Specific Objectives, it drives a green, smart, and just transition across North-West Europe.

Explore the project gallery to discover the diverse themes and topics our projects tackle. Each project is visually showcased and accompanied by a story highlighting its expected impact on citizens and territories.

Climate adaptation and disaster risk prevention

North-West Europe faces growing floods, droughts, and water quality and availability challenges, calling for stronger cooperation on water management and climate resilience.

Discover how the Programme tackles these challenges with 12 projects focusing on climate resilience of rivers, forests, soils, water cycles and built environments.

Energy efficiency

Improving energy efficiency and scaling up smart, decentralised energy systems are key to reducing fossil fuel dependence and green-house gas emissions in North-West Europe.

The Programme addresses these challenges with 10 projects focusing on sustainable energy management systems for business parks, energy communities and the transport sector, district heating and cooling systems, and the mitigation of energy poverty.

Renewable energy

Despite progress, North-West Europe must unlock more renewable energy potential and overcome barriers to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

By developing locally adapted aquathermal heating and cooling solutions, exploring wastewater as energy source, advancing mobile airborne wind energy, and building capacity for the hydrogen sector, 9 NWE projects are contributing to the energy transition in NWE.

Circular and resource efficient economy

While advanced in circular economy practices, North-West Europe still needs to improve waste management and ensure benefits are shared across all regions.

The NWE Programme supports 19 initiatives that promote circular approaches across North-West Europe, targeting key sectors like agriculture and biomass conversion, construction, household consumer goods, packaging and textiles.

Innovation capacities and uptake of technologies

Reducing regional disparities in the innovation capacity of regions, the use of technologies or the deployment of digitalisation is crucial for NWE regions and involves improving the innovation capacity of both public and private actors.

Discover the 20 projects funded by the NWE Programme driving innovation and territorial resilience in key areas for North-West Europe, such as smart and sustainable agriculture, data and territorial planning, and marine energy.

Access to employment

Improving access to the labour market, promoting quality employment, and enhancing the employability of disadvantaged groups, such as NEETs, refugees, people with disabilities, are important challenges for NWE.

Through two funded projects, the NWE Programme supports these groups in accessing employment. They focus on migrant entrepreneurs by helping them develop their businesses, as well as on vulnerable young people.

Access to healthcare

Reducing disparities in access to healthcare and long-term care services, particularly in rural and peripheral areas, is an important challenge for NWE.

By developing innovative, smart, or digital approaches to improve access to healthcare, 5 NWE projects are offering solutions to better address heart disease, support patients with neurological or mental health conditions or improve rehabilitation services.

Culture and sustainable tourism

Culture and tourism are in need of greater support to ensure they can contribute to the balanced and sustainable territorial development of NWE regions, particularly since the economic consequences of the COVID pandemic.

Four NWE projects address this challenge by nudging citizens towards new sites, new routes or new ways of accessing touristic areas, therefore encouraging more sustainable tourism practices.
